Silverton, Colorado
Hurricane Pass may be short, but it packs plenty of classic San Juan scenery into its high-alpine route. Many drivers use it as a convenient connector to nearby gems like Corkscrew Gulch or California Pass, yet the switchbacks and shelf roads still provide their own excitement. Views of Lake Como and the Red Mountains highlight the route, while the summit area (around 12,000 feet) reveals stark geology and spectacular panoramas over alpine ponds, ridges, and distant peaks. Though generally regarded as “easier” by local standards, Hurricane Pass remains a memorable drive thanks to its lofty vantage points, colorful rock formations, and the possibility of spotting herds of sheep grazing on the high slopes.

Because the trail climbs far above timberline and features narrow roads, campsites are minimal or nonexistent along the main corridor. If you’re planning a multi-day route, consider camping in more spacious areas nearby—such as along the Alpine Loop or near Animas Forks—where designated spots and pull-offs are more plentiful. Always check local fire restrictions, especially in drier months when conditions can make campfires hazardous.
